Awesome 2D short about personal space!

[Eng] “My Day” is the third-year project of  Eamonn O’Neill, an Irish animation student at IADT in Dun Laoghaire (a city on the outskirts of Dublin). I really like this short. Great style and direction make us immediately feel the tension and that strange feeling of uneasiness you get when someone invades your personal space. Great work!

[Fr] “My Day” est le projet de troisième année de Eamonn O’Neill, étudiant à IADT de Dun Laoghaire (une ville en périphérie de Dublin). J’aime beaucoup ce court. Le style et la direction nous font rapidement ressentir la tension et cet étrange sentiment d’inconfort que l’on ressent quand quelqu’un envahit notre espace personnel. Excellent film!

More Supinfocom magic!

[Eng] “On a rainy afternoon, a child plays with his snails and falls along with them in a dreamy circus.” I am always impressed by the quality and originality of the shorts coming out of  Supinfocom (école SUPérieure d’INFOrmatique de COMmunication) a French computer graphics university with campuses in Valenciennes, Arles and Pune (India). Bravo to Philippe Desfretier, Nicolas Dufresne, Sylvain Kauffmann and Martin Laugero for this beautiful animated feast!

[Fr] “Un après-midi pluvieux, un enfant joue avec ses escargots et plonge avec eux dans un rêve de cirque”. Je suis toujours impressionné par la qualité et l’originalité des courts d’animation qui sorte de Supinfocom (école SUPérieure d’INFOrmatique de COMmunication) une université française avec des campus à Valenciennes, Arles et Pune (Inde). Bravo à Philippe Desfretier, Nicolas Dufresne, Sylvain Kauffmann et Martin Laugero pour cette petite merveille d’animation!

Great lighting, rendering and animation!

[Eng] This is an amazing short by director Moo-hyun Jang and independent Animation team MESAI (South Korea). The quality of the lighting, texturing, rendering and animation are spectacular for a film made by such a small team. Watch it full screen and tell us what you think!

[Fr] Un court métrage d’animation impressionnant du directeur Moo-hyun Jang et de l’équipe d’animation indépendante MESAI (Corée du Sud). La qualité de l’éclairage, les textures, le rendu et l’animation sont spectaculaires pour un film réalisé par une si petite équipe. À voir plein écran et dites-nous ce que vous en pensez!

A Swedish animated movie featuring the voices of Juliette Lewis and Vincent Galo?

[Eng] Metropia, directed by Tarik Saleh, is a feature-length animated movie from Sweden. The film was co-produced by Atmo Metro (Sweden), Zentropa Entertainment (Denmark), and Tordenfilm As (Norway) and has received 400,000 Euros from Eurimages (European cinema fun). Despite the relatively small budget of $3 million, the images I have seen to date, along with the two videos shown in this post, are very promising.

The film appears to be a great blend of stop motion, 2D animation and possibly 3D. Juliette Lewis and Vincent Gallo have already been confirmed for voices. The movie is expected to be released in the fall of 2009. I will keep you posted with up-to-the-minute updates!

The first video is the official trailer. The other is an interview with the director (unfortunately in Swedish. Wish I’d paid more attention to the Swedish chef…) where you can see some excerpts from the movie.

[Fr] Metropia, réalisé par Tarik Saleh, est un long-métrage d’animation en provenance de Suède. Le film serait une coproduction de Atmo Metro (Suède), Zentropa Entertainment (Danemark), et Tordenfilm As (Norvège) et aurait reçu une aide de 400 000 euros de la part d’Eurimages (fonds de soutien au cinéma européen). Malgré un relativement petit budget de 3 millions de dollars, les images qui me sont parvenus et les deux vidéos ci-joints sont très prometteurs.

Le film semble un heureux mélange de stop motion, d’animation 2D et possiblement de 3D. Et pour la distribution des voix en anglais, on confirme déjà Juliette Lewis et Vincent Gallo. Sortie prévue: automne 2009. Je vous tiens au courant dès que j’en sais un peu plus!

Le premier vidéo est la plus récente bande-annonce officielle. L’autre c’est une entrevue avec le réalisateur (en suédois malheureusement) où on peut apercevoir quelques extraits du film.

Great work by animator/director Konstantin Bronzit

[Eng] This beautiful heart-warming animation from Russia shows us yet again that you do not need 3D or sfx to captivate your audience. Often, all you need is a good story and well-crafted, good old-fashion 2d animation. This was nominated for Best Animated Short Film at the Academy Awards (OSCAR) 2009.

Superbe réalisation de l’animateur/réalisateur Konstantin Bronzit

[Fr] Ce très bon et touchant court métrage d’animation russe est un autre bon exemple qu’il ne faut pas nécessairement tout faire en 3D, ou utiliser des effets spéciaux spectaculaires, pour toucher l’auditoire. Souvent, tout ce qu’il vous faut c’est une bonne histoire et une animation 2D de la plus pure tradition. Ce film était en nomination pour les Academy Awards (OSCAR) 2009.
