Awesome 2D short about personal space!

[Eng] “My Day” is the third-year project of  Eamonn O’Neill, an Irish animation student at IADT in Dun Laoghaire (a city on the outskirts of Dublin). I really like this short. Great style and direction make us immediately feel the tension and that strange feeling of uneasiness you get when someone invades your personal space. Great work!

More Supinfocom magic!

[Eng] “On a rainy afternoon, a child plays with his snails and falls along with them in a dreamy circus.” I am always impressed by the quality and originality of the shorts coming out of  Supinfocom (école SUPérieure d’INFOrmatique de COMmunication) a French computer graphics university with campuses in Valenciennes, Arles and Pune (India). Bravo to Philippe Desfretier, Nicolas Dufresne, Sylvain Kauffmann and Martin Laugero for this beautiful animated feast!

[Fr] “Un après-midi pluvieux, un enfant joue avec ses escargots et plonge avec eux dans un rêve de cirque”. Je suis toujours impressionné par la qualité et l’originalité des courts d’animation qui sorte de Supinfocom (école SUPérieure d’INFOrmatique de COMmunication) une université française avec des campus à Valenciennes, Arles et Pune (Inde). Bravo à Philippe Desfretier, Nicolas Dufresne, Sylvain Kauffmann et Martin Laugero pour cette petite merveille d’animation!

Great lighting, rendering and animation!

[Eng] This is an amazing short by director Moo-hyun Jang and independent Animation team MESAI (South Korea). The quality of the lighting, texturing, rendering and animation are spectacular for a film made by such a small team. Watch it full screen and tell us what you think!

[Eng] I “met” Graham Ross on Twitter (@GrahamHRoss) just as he was completing his graduate degree at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. There was already a teaser and some stills of his animation work on his blog, but it was only about a month ago that I finally got to see the final product of this very impressive short. Working solo and  making a short animated film like this is quite an undertaking. I am very pleased to feature Graham’s work on my blog.

“The origin of the idea is hard to pinpoint.  I was looking for something that took place in one set with one character.  Since it was my sole responsibility to complete the film I had to really simplify things, so complicated texturing and huge sets were out immediately.  I think since I was young I’d always been interested in macro photography and seeing everyday objects from a different perspective.  So, everything just kind of fell into place!
It took me about two years to complete.  I used mostly Maya but for finishing I used Flash, After Effects and Premiere.”

[Fr] J’ai “rencontré” Graham Ross sur Twitter (@GrahamHRoss) juste comme il complétait sa formation à the Academy of Art de San Francisco. Il y avait déjà un court extrait et quelques images de son animation sur son blogue, mais c’est seulement il y a un mois environ que j’ai eu la chance de voir la version finale de cet impressionnant petit film. Travailler seul à la création d’un court métrage d’animation comme celui-ci est tout un défi. Je suis très heureux de présenter le travail de Graham sur mon blogue.

« L’origine de l’idée est difficile à cerner. Je cherchais une histoire qui se passerait dans un seul lieu, avec un seul personnage. Comme l’ensemble du travail sur ce film était ma responsabilité, j’ai vraiment dû simplifier les choses, ce qui éliminait immédiatement les textures complexes et les énormes décors. Je pense que,  depuis mon tout jeune âge, j’ai toujours été intéressé par la macro photographie. De voir les objets de la vie courante dans une perspective différente. C’est ainsi que tout s’est plus ou moins mis en place! Il m’a fallu environ deux ans pour effectuer le travail. J’ai utilisé essentiellement Maya, mais pour la finition j’ai aussi utilisé Flash, After Effects et Premiere. »

[Eng] “In a black & white Paris, little creatures with paintbrush decide to brighten up the city…” I love this short! I really like the shots of Paris in b&w. I also like that the animated characters are simple geometric shapes. There is something very peaceful and happy about the whole piece. Great work!

[Fr] «Dans un Paris tout noir et blanc, de petites créatures décident d’enjoliver la ville, pinceaux à la main…». J’adore ce court métrage! J’aime beaucoup les séquences de Paris en noir & blanc. J’aime aussi la simplicité toute géométrique des personnages animés. L’ensemble du court métrage laisse une impression de paix et de gaieté. Beau travail!

[Eng] I found this nice animated short on Vimeo. Made at the renowned international film school Baden-Württemberg Filmakademie (in Germany) by Egmont Mayer. I like the design and the story. The animation work, in Softimage|XSI, is good too. “A man lives alone in a small apartment. The little contact he had with other people has dropped to zero since the rabbit appeared. Every attempt to get the rabbit out of his apartment has failed and since he is not sure whether or not pets are allowed in the building, he does not let anybody enter his apartment.”

[Fr] J’ai trouvé ce charmant court métrage d’animation sur Viméo. Réaliser à la réputée école internationale du film Baden-Württemberg Filmakademie (en Allemagne) par Egmont Mayer. J’aime bien le design et l’histoire. Le travail d’animation, en Softimage|XSI, est aussi très bien. «Un homme vit seul dans un petit appartement. Le peu de contacts qu’il a avec d’autres personnes est tombé à zéro depuis l’arrivée du lapin. Toute tentative de sortir le lapin de son appartement a échoué. Comme il n’est pas sûr que les animaux sont admis dans le bâtiment, il ne laisse personne entrer dans son appartement.»

[Eng] This is the first post about an ongoing in-house short animated movie project we are working on. I thought I could show you these two (not consecutive) pages of the storyboard I did. As you can tell, it is quite an uplifting subject! Yes, the storyboard is hand drawn on paper with indian ink and brush. No computer for this one, but I have to admit that nowadays I am using my Wacom Cintiq graphic tablet more then brushes and paper.
___As you may have noticed, I have blurred or removed the comments and markings on these scans to create some suspense… But I still wanted to show you this, and I will share more as the project evolves. The final animation will be a mix of 2D and 3D. I will soon post a sequence of the animatic and some test renders. Stay tuned!

[Fr] Voici mon premier billet au sujet d’un « projet maison » de court métrage d’animation sur lequel nous travaillons. J’ai pensé vous présenter ces deux pages (non consécutive) du story-board (scénarimage) que j’ai réalisé. Comme vous pouvez le constater, le sujet est très serein et joyeux! Effectivement,  j’ai réalisé ces dessins à la main, avec pinceaux et à l’encre de Chine. Pas à l’ordinateur cette fois-ci bien que, je dois l’admettre, dernièrement je travaille beaucoup plus avec ma tablette graphique Cintiq de Wacom qu’avec papier et pinceaux.
___Vous avez sans doute remarqué que j’ai brouillé ou enlevé les commentaires et indications qui apparaissaient sur ces images, question de conserver un certain suspense… Cependant, je voulais quand même vous les montrer, car je vais vous informer de l’évolution du travail au fur et à mesure de nos progrès. L’animation finale sera un mélange de 2D et 3D. Je vais bientôt vous montrer une petite séquence de l’animatique et quelques tests de rendus. À bientôt!
